Learn the skill

Work with an adult who can model letter sounds. Learn any new sounds first. Point to each letter from left to right, join the sounds, and read the whole word. After a change, check every letter again. An adult may read the directions, but let the learner try the words. Pointing or saying an answer is fine; no timer or recording is needed. Questions check letter changes, not spoken reading.

Worked example

Mat becomes sat when m changes to s. Sat becomes sap when the last t changes to p. Read every letter, not just the changed one.

Three letter boxes spell mat in reading order, with a left-to-right arrow underneath. — Point from left to right. Join the sounds and say the whole word with your helper.

Read together before the questions
