Multiply every term inside a bracket by its outside factor. A minus before brackets means multiply by -1. Collect like terms, apply the same operation to both sides, and check your answer in both original expressions.

Worked example

2(x - 5) = x + 3 becomes 2x - 10 = x + 3. Subtract x and add 10: x = 13. Check the original: 2(13 - 5) = 16 and 13 + 3 = 16.

A positive factor multiplies both bracket terms; a negative factor changes both signs. Three times x plus two expands to three x plus six, and negative two times x minus three expands to negative two x plus six.
The outside factor multiplies every term, not only the first one.
Question 1 Solve 3(x - 2) = x + 8. What is x?
Question 2 Solve -2(x + 5) = x - 1. What is x?
Question 3 Solve 7 - (3x - 2) = x + 9. What is x?
Question 4 Solve 3(2x + 1) = 2(x - 6). What is x?
Question 5 Solve -4(x - 3) = 2(x + 3). What is x?
