Expand each bracket by multiplying every term inside by its outside factor. Combine like terms on each side. Use matching operations to solve, then substitute into the original brackets.

Worked example

3(x + 2) = x + 14 becomes 3x + 6 = x + 14. Subtract x and 6: 2x = 8, so x = 4. The original sides both equal 18.

The factor 3 multiplies both x and 2 inside a bracket, giving 3x plus 6. A separate signed example shows negative 2 times x minus 3 expands to negative 2x plus 6.
Multiply every term, including its sign. The outside factor reaches the entire bracket.
Question 1 Solve 2(x + 4) = x + 13. What is x?
Question 2 Solve 4(x - 2) = 2x + 6. What is x?
Question 3 Solve -3(x + 2) = x + 10. What is x?
Question 4 Solve 5 - (2x + 3) = x - 4. What is x?
Question 5 Solve 2(3x - 1) = 4(x + 2). What is x?
