Choose either side for the variable terms. State the same operation on both sides and keep each sign with its term. A proposed solution must satisfy the original equation.

Worked example

5x + 2 = 2x + 14 reduces to 3x = 12, so x = 4. Another valid route gives -12 = -3x and the same x = 4.

A worked equation uses matching operations on the left and right to reach x equals 4, then checks that both original expressions equal 22.
Use matching operations, not a rule about terms magically crossing the equals sign.
Question 1 Solve 8x + 1 = 5x - 11. What is x?
Question 2 Solve 3x - 7 = x + 9. What is x?
Question 3 Solve 4 - 2x = x + 10. What is x?
Question 4 Solve 5x + 12 = 9x + 12. What is x?
Question 5 Solve -3x + 2 = -x - 12. What is x?
