Learn the skill

When a solid dissolves, it spreads through a liquid as particles too small to see individually. Not all solids dissolve in water. Disappearing from sight does not mean matter has vanished.

Worked example

After sugar is stirred into water, no grains are visible. The sugar has dissolved; it has not ceased to exist. Sand, in contrast, remains as visible grains.

Two Cups

Cup A contains water and a small spoonful of salt. After stirring, the salt grains are no longer visible. Cup B contains water and sand. After stirring and waiting, sand collects at the bottom. Neither cup is heated.
