Earth's axis is tilted relative to its orbit. During part of the year one hemisphere tilts toward the Sun, receiving longer daylight and more direct sunlight. The other hemisphere experiences the opposite seasonal tendency.
Worked example
When the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the Sun, its summer occurs while the Southern Hemisphere has winter. This contrast cannot be explained by Earth-Sun distance alone.
