A helper reads the parts and choices aloud. Say each pair with a short pause, then join it into one whole word. Try before looking at the choices. Pointing or saying an answer is fine. Explain any unfamiliar word first; no independent reading, timer or recording is needed. Questions check word combinations, not speech or reading fluency.
Worked example
Cup and cake make cupcake. Say both parts, then say the whole word smoothly. Not every long word has two parts that are words by themselves.
Listen and speak first
Helper: say back, then pack. Let the learner join them. Say sunlight and ask for its two familiar parts. Model backpack and sun plus light after the learner tries. This spoken practice is not automatically scored.
