A helper reads the parts and choices aloud. Say each pair with a short pause, then join it into one whole word. Try before looking at the choices. Pointing or saying an answer is fine. Explain any unfamiliar word first; no independent reading, timer or recording is needed. Questions check word combinations, not speech or reading fluency.
Worked example
Sun and shine make sunshine. Keep both parts in the same order. Saying just sun leaves out the second part.
Listen and speak first
Helper: say cup, then cake. Let the learner join them. Say raincoat and ask for its two familiar parts. Model cupcake and rain plus coat after the learner tries. This spoken practice is not automatically scored.
