Learn the skill

Work with an adult who can model letter sounds. Learn any new sounds first. Point to each letter from left to right, join the sounds, and read the whole word. After a change, check every letter again. An adult may read the directions, but let the learner try the words. Pointing or saying an answer is fine; no timer or recording is needed. Questions check letter changes, not spoken reading.

Worked example

Hen becomes pen when h changes to p. Pen becomes pet when the last n changes to t. Read the middle e as well as the ends.

Three letter boxes spell hen in reading order, with a left-to-right arrow underneath. — Point from left to right. Join the sounds and say the whole word with your helper.

Would you believe it?

Ten and net use the same three letters in a different order. Their middle e stays put while the end letters trade places. Read each word from left to right.

Read together before the questions

leg, peg, pen, ten. Meg can get wet. Read the chain slowly, then read it again. Tell what the sentence or phrases mean. Your helper can model a sound and let you try again. This reading is not automatically scored.
