Learn the skill

Use equal-sized wholes. Rename both fractions with a common denominator, subtract their numerators and keep that denominator. A whole can be renamed as equal parts. Keep all pieces when the starting amount exceeds one; check by adding the removed amount back.

Worked example

5/4 - 1/3 = 15/12 - 4/12 = 11/12. Five quarters fill one whole and one more quarter. Eleven twelfths stay and four leave. Check: 11/12 + 4/12 = 15/12. Both whole frames stay the same size.

Worked example: 5/4 minus 1/3. Every outlined frame is the same whole. Start with 15/12. Keep 11/12; cross out 4/12. The crossed and kept parts together rebuild 15/12. White spaces were not loaded. Practice questions use different amounts.
Solid parts stay; crossed parts leave. The check reconstructs the starting load. Example amounts differ from the questions.
