The distance from 0 to 1 is one whole. Keep that distance fixed. The denominator names equal intervals per whole; the numerator counts intervals traveled from zero. Count gaps, not ticks. Passing 1 does not restart the count. Use one shared unit length when comparing positions.

Worked example

On the upper line, 1/3 = 4/12 is left of 1/2 = 6/12. On the lower line, 1/2 and 2/4 align exactly. Both lines use the same unit distance. The questions use fresh comparisons.

Worked example: one line from 0 to 2 uses twelve equal intervals per whole. A at 1/3 takes four intervals; B at 1/2 takes six. A is left of B. A lower line with the same unit length shows 1/2 and 2/4 aligned at one position.
Numbers name positions. Equal unit lengths make comparisons meaningful; the starting tick is not a traveled step.
Question 1 On one number line, compare A = 4/5 with B = 3/4. A is:
Question 2 On one number line, compare A = 3/5 with B = 6/10. A is:
Question 3 On one number line, compare A = 7/4 with B = 5/3. A is:
Question 4 How many sixteenth-size intervals from 0 reach 5/8?
Question 5 Two drawings use different unit lengths: 2/3 is 4 cm from zero on one; 3/4 is 3 cm from zero on the other. Which number is larger?
