1. One picture, three clues

Look at these three shapes. We can talk about their color, their shape, and how light or dark they look. Let us check one thing at a time. An adult can read the labels with you.
2. Start with color

Shape A is light green. Shape B is dark green. Both belong to the green color family. They do not have to look exactly the same to share that name.
3. Now check the shape

A and B are circles. C is a square. A and C are both light green, but they have different shapes. Saying green does not tell us whether something is a circle or a square.
4. Light and dark

Compare A and B again. They share a shape and a color family. What is different? A is lighter, and B is darker. We can use the written labels to help us compare.
5. Pause: try three new shapes

Here are three new shapes. D is a light purple triangle. E is a dark purple triangle. F is a yellow triangle. Pause here. Which two share a color family? Are those two equally light?
6. Same family, different lightness

D and E are both purple. D is lighter than E. All three shapes are triangles, including the yellow one. You checked color, shape, and lightness separately. That helps us say exactly what we mean.
7. A circle stays a circle

Fun fact: changing a circle from blue to yellow does not make it a square. A circle cannot grow corners just by changing its outfit! Color and shape describe different things about the same picture.

Continue to the worksheet below. You will compare some new labeled shapes. You can also draw two circles with one pencil. Make one lightly shaded and one darker. They are still two circles. No upload is needed.

- Compare labeled shapes by color family without assuming that matching colors mean matching shapes.
- Describe lightness separately from color family, using the labels when helpful.
