Identify the resource, how people used it, and the evidence that survives. A useful resource makes activities possible, but does not by itself explain every social or political choice.
Worked example
A plant used for writing sheets connects an environment with record keeping. The existence of writing sheets does not prove that everyone could write.
Papyrus and Its Uses
Papyrus grew in wet areas including the Nile Delta. Ancient craftspeople used it for items including writing sheets, made from strips arranged in crossing layers. Surviving papyrus texts include administrative records. The surviving objects represent some people and activities, not a complete record of every Egyptian's life.
