Learn the skill

Follow the outside boundary slowly. Notice straight parts, curves and turns before adding details. Look back at the picture to check a specific difference. You may draw, point or explain; a creative style is not being tested.

Worked example

This bowl has curved sides but a straight bottom. The stripe lies inside the outline. An outer contour need not include every interior mark.

Invented bowl: a straight top connects to curved sides and a short straight bottom. A stripe lies inside without touching the outline.
Observe this drawing. Other bowls can have different shapes. Color is not needed to follow its edges.
Question 1 What kind of line forms the sides of this bowl picture?
Question 2 Which part is straight in this model?
Question 3 Should you trace the middle stripe as part of this bowl's outer contour?
Question 4 Your sketch has straight sides, but you want to follow this model. What observation supports a revision?
Question 5 Which plan uses careful observation?

Make It Your Own

Invent a bowl-like shape on paper or describe one. Follow its outer contour in a second sketch or spoken path. Compare one side with your model and explain one change you would make. Materials and this creative task are optional; no upload or personal information is needed. The drawing is not scored.

Reflect on your choices

  • Name a straight part and a curved part of your model, when present.
  • Compare one observed edge with the second version.
  • Explain a possible revision without judging one art style as best.
