A cell can change in more than one way. Count each changed cell only once when asked for changed cells. To find the number of objects, add all cell quantities separately.

Worked example

If A1 changes from one star to two stars, one cell changes and one object is added. The answers differ because they count different things.

Before: 1 star, 2 circles, 1 triangle; 1 diamond, empty, 1 square. After: 2 stars, 1 diamond, 1 triangle; 2 circles, empty, 1 circle. Four cells differ. — Four changed cells; total objects increase from six to seven.

A Six-Cell Inventory

Before: A1 has 1 star; B1 has 2 circles; C1 has 1 triangle; A2 has 1 diamond; B2 is empty; C2 has 1 square. After: A1 has 2 stars; B1 has 1 diamond; C1 has 1 triangle; A2 has 2 circles; B2 is empty; C2 has 1 circle. B1 and A2 exchange their entire contents. C2 changes type, and A1 gains one star.
