Magnification is image length divided by actual length when both use the same units. To recover actual size, divide the image length by magnification. Larger images do not necessarily resolve more detail.

Worked example

A 20 mm image at 1000x represents 20/1000 mm = 0.020 mm = 20 micrometers.

A 20 mm image at 1000x represents 20/1000 mm = 0.020 mm = 20 micrometers.
A 20 mm image at 1000x represents 20/1000 mm = 0.020 mm = 20 micrometers.
Question 1 A model micrograph shows a structure 10 mm long at 1000x magnification. What actual length does that represent in micrometers? Use 1 mm = 1000 micrometers.
Question 2 A model micrograph shows a structure 15 mm long at 1000x magnification. What actual length does that represent in micrometers? Use 1 mm = 1000 micrometers.
Question 3 A model micrograph shows a structure 20 mm long at 1000x magnification. What actual length does that represent in micrometers? Use 1 mm = 1000 micrometers.
Question 4 A model micrograph shows a structure 25 mm long at 1000x magnification. What actual length does that represent in micrometers? Use 1 mm = 1000 micrometers.
Question 5 A model micrograph shows a structure 30 mm long at 1000x magnification. What actual length does that represent in micrometers? Use 1 mm = 1000 micrometers.
