Learn the skill
In an ideal exponential-decay model, the expected undecayed amount halves each half-life. Count the number of equal intervals. Individual decays are random; small exact particle counts need not follow the expectation precisely.
Worked example
An expected amount of 80 units becomes 40, then 20 after two half-lives. It is not reduced by 40 at every step.
