Tectonic plates are solid parts of the lithosphere. At divergent boundaries they separate; at convergent boundaries they move together; at transform boundaries they slide past. Boundary type helps explain processes but does not predict an exact event time.

Worked example

When two plates separate at a mid-ocean ridge, new oceanic crust can form. Sliding sideways at a transform boundary is a different motion.

1. Two plates move apart. Which boundary type fits?
2. Two plates slide horizontally past each other. Which type fits?
3. At which type can one plate descend beneath another?
4. Are tectonic plates giant sheets of liquid?
5. Does identifying a boundary type give an exact date for its next earthquake?
