Igneous rock forms when molten material cools. Sedimentary rock can form when sediments become compacted and cemented. Metamorphic rock forms through changes without complete melting. The cycle has multiple routes, not a required starting point.

Worked example

A rock can weather into sediment, become sedimentary rock, and later change under heat and pressure. If it melts and then cools, the resulting rock is igneous.

1. Lava cools and solidifies. Which rock group forms?
2. Sand grains become cemented together. Which rock group is represented?
3. A rock changes under heat and pressure without completely melting. Which group can result?
4. Must every rock pass through all three groups in the same order?
5. What must happen before molten material can become solid igneous rock?
