Learn the skill

For steady incompressible flow with no leaks, Q = A v. Hydraulic power is gauge pressure times volume flow, pQ, and ideal piston power is Fv. Convert cm^3/s to m^3/s before using SI pressure. Use diagrams and calculations only; never build or operate a press for this activity.

Worked example

A flow of 20 cm^3/s into area 10 cm^2 gives speed 2 cm/s. A flow of 0.00002 m^3/s at 50,000 Pa carries 1 W.

At 20 cubic centimeters per second, an area of 10 square centimeters moves at 2 centimeters per second and an area of 20 square centimeters moves at 1 centimeter per second.
At 20 cubic centimeters per second, an area of 10 square centimeters moves at 2 centimeters per second and an area of 20 square centimeters moves at 1 centimeter per second.
Question 1 What speed comes from 20 cm^3/s divided by 10 cm^2?
Question 2 At the same flow, area 20 cm^2 gives what speed?
Question 3 Convert 20 cm^3/s to m^3/s.
Question 4 Calculate 50,000 Pa x 0.00002 m^3/s.
Question 5 Which situation breaks Q = A v for all the inlet flow?
