Find the net force before using F = ma. For positive mass, a = F/m. Opposing forces subtract; forces in the same direction add. These questions use magnitudes unless a direction is explicitly requested.

Worked example

A 3 kg cart has 14 N right and 2 N left. Its net force is 12 N right, so its acceleration is 12/3 = 4 meters per second squared to the right.
