Learn the skill
Separate making heat, gaining heat, and slowing heat loss. Endotherms make substantial heat internally, but also use behavior. Ectotherms can regulate temperature by moving between warmer and cooler places; they do not simply stay wherever they get too hot or cold.
Worked example
A mammal's fur helps retain heat rather than acting as a heater. A lizard basking gains outside heat. These are different ways of affecting body temperature.
