Learn the skill

Identify who created the message and what they want the audience to do. Sponsorship does not prove a claim false, but it is relevant context. Look for methods, comparisons, and independent evidence.

Worked example

An advertisement saying a notebook 'doubles learning' needs a definition of learning and a credible comparison. Attractive pictures are not measurements.

Invented Advertisement

A notebook company's sponsored post says its notebook 'doubles learning' and invites readers to buy. It includes one enthusiastic customer comment but no study methods, outcome definition, or comparison group.

1. What is the sponsor trying to encourage?
2. Which information is missing from the learning claim?
3. Does sponsorship alone establish that the claim is false?
4. Which support would be stronger than one enthusiastic testimonial?
5. Why look beyond the sponsor's own page?
