Some familiar spellings keep a letter we do not hear separately: k in knee, w in write and b in climb. Read the meaning clue before choosing a repair. Keep the other letters too; adding a quiet letter does not mean doubling a different letter. Check unfamiliar words with a dictionary or a trusted adult. A spelling pattern does not tell us how every matching letter group sounds.

Worked example

Draft: Please rite a note. Repair: write. The sentence means put words on a page, so write is the useful spelling here. Keep its w. In water, however, w is heard; the first letter is not always quiet.

Knee, write and climb appear on separate cards. An underline marks the k, w and b that remain in the written words without separate sounds.
