Learn the skill

Use equal-sized pieces from the same whole. Subtract their counts, not their denominators. Keep any extra whole: a remainder can exceed one whole or equal zero. Check by adding the remaining amount to the removed amount.

Worked example

7/8 - 3/8 = 4/8 = 1/2. Seven eighth-size pieces start aboard; three leave and four stay. Check: 4/8 + 3/8 = 7/8. The picture shows this example, not the questions.

Worked example: 7/8 minus 3/8. Every outlined frame is the same whole. Start with 7/8. Keep 4/8; cross out 3/8. The crossed and kept parts together rebuild 7/8. White spaces were not loaded. Practice questions use different amounts.
