If payment is greater than the price, subtract price from payment to find change. Check price + change = payment. Equal amounts need zero change. If payment is less than the price, more money is needed; do not return change.

Worked example

For a 47-cent price and a 100-cent payment, count up 3 cents to 50, then 50 cents to 100. Return 3 + 50 = 53 cents. Check 47 + 53 = 100.

Count up from a 47-cent price: add 3 to reach 50, then add 50 to reach 100 cents paid. Return 53 cents.
Schematic steps, not a distance scale. Price plus change must equal payment.
