A budget is a plan for money. Start with the amount available, add money received and subtract costs. Keep every number in the same unit. A receipt helps you check what was actually paid. These are pretend classroom amounts, not real purchases.

Worked example

Start with 200 cents and spend 65 cents. There are 200 - 65 = 135 cents left. Planning to buy something does not itself spend the money; update your record when a purchase happens.

Start with 300 cents. Spend 120 on paper and 45 on a pencil, leaving 135 cents. Receive 50 cents to reach 185.
All amounts are pretend cents. Keep the same unit throughout.

Paper Craft Shop

You have 300 pretend cents. One paper pack costs 120 cents. One pencil costs 45 cents. You plan to buy one of each. Later a pretend helper gives you 50 cents. Work with these stated prices only; there are no taxes or extra charges in this exercise.

Question 1 What is the total planned cost of one paper pack and one pencil, in cents?
Question 2 After buying both, how many cents remain from the starting 300?
Question 3 Then you receive 50 more cents. How many cents do you have?
Question 4 A receipt lists the paper pack at 150 cents, but the agreed price was 120. What should you do?
Question 5 From the 185 cents now available, you set aside 80. How many cents remain available to spend?
