An equal-value exchange changes the pieces but not the total. Compare the sum before and after. More pieces do not always mean more value. Use only the stated labels, not the size or color of the drawings.

Worked example

One 10c piece can be exchanged for two 5c pieces because 10 = 5 + 5. The drawing below is a separate 16-cent counting example.

A 10c piece, a 5c piece and a 1c piece total 16 cents. — You can exchange the 10c piece for two 5c pieces and still have 16 cents.
