First and then

A tiny story

Here is a pretend story about a tower. A child adds one block. A grown-up can read the words First and Then over the pictures.

Look at box A

In box A, the picture on the left says First. It has one block. The picture on the right says Then. It has two blocks. One block was added.

Your turn

Look at box B. Which tower came first? The pictures have switched places. Ask your grown-up to read the labels. Pause and point to First.

Read the label

In box B, the right tower came first. It says First and has two blocks. Then it has three. We use the labels to follow this story, not just the place on the page.

Remember a tower

Here is a fun fact. A drawing can show a tower even after the blocks are put away. It keeps a record. The drawing does not tell us what the tower looks like now.
