Let's add
Let's add nine plus four. There are nine dots in the box. There are four yellow dots beside it.
One empty space
Look at the empty space. This box holds ten dots. Nine dots need one more to make ten.
Move one dot
Move one yellow dot into the empty space. Nine plus one is ten. The box is full!
Three dots left
Three yellow dots are left beside the box. Ten in the box, plus three more. Ten plus three is thirteen.
We have thirteen!
We still have all the same dots. We just moved one. Nine plus four is thirteen!
Your turn
Let's try eight plus five. Pause here. How many dots will fill the empty spaces?
Make ten again
Eight needs two more dots. Move two yellow dots into the box. Now we have ten, with three dots left. Eight plus five is thirteen!
