Change a short-i word
Learning goal: Read a short-i word chain with a helper, check the middle and ending, and read what Tim can do.
Before you start: Work with an adult on short-i and the consonant sounds in the words. Review the short-a chain and can before the sentence; introduce any new sounds before reading.

1. A new middle sound

This word is pin. Today we will read short words with the middle sound you hear in pin. Read with someone who can help you. Learn any new letter sounds together before you begin. Point from left to right, join the sounds, and read the whole word: pin. We only need letters, not real pins.
2. Change the first letter

Start with pin. Change the first letter to t. Keep the middle and last letters. Read the whole new word: tin. Tin is a kind of metal. Pin. Tin. They end the same way. Still check every letter as you read. The first sound matters, just like the middle and the end.
3. Change the last letter

Start with tin. Change the last letter to p. Now read tip. The tip of a pencil is its end. Tin and tip begin the same way. The last letter tells us which word to read. Point to the change, join the sounds, and say the whole word again.
4. Read what Tim can do

Tim is a name. We saw can in our earlier word chain. Read this tiny sentence: Tim can sit. What can Tim do? He can sit. Try reading it again smoothly, without racing. Tim does not need a speed record for sitting. He just needs somewhere to sit.
5. Pause and try two changes

Pause here. Start with fin. Change the last letter to t. Read all three letters and say the new word. Now change only the first letter to s. What word have you made? Take time to check each place. Ask your helper for a sound if you need one, then try the whole word.
6. Check the new chain

Changing the last letter of fin to t makes fit. Changing the first letter of fit to s makes sit. Fin. Fit. Sit. Only one letter changed at each step. If you missed a change, point to it and try again. Then go back and read our sentence: Tim can sit.
7. A middle letter can change too

Fun fact: sat and sit have the same first and last letters. Their middle letters are different. Read sat, then sit. Listen with your helper for the different middle sounds. First and last letters alone are not enough. The middle has a job too. Every letter gets a turn.
8. Keep the chain going

Open the next worksheet below. Read the short word chains with your helper before you choose answers. Later, try its second sheet. Your helper can say a word for you to build or write, then listen while you read it back. These questions check letter changes, not your voice. Careful practice matters more than speed.
Show your understanding
You can point, explain aloud, draw or write.
- Track first, last and middle letter changes without guessing from a word shape.
- With a helper, read a fresh word chain and Tim can sit, then explain the sentence. Automatic questions do not assess pronunciation or spoken fluency.
Try it yourself
Pause at fin. Make the two changes and read each new word before revealing the check.
