A manuscript is written by hand. Movable type uses reusable pieces arranged for printing; a carved woodblock holds a larger fixed design. Printing histories include several regions and technologies, so do not claim one European inventor invented all printing.

Worked example

A page copied with a pen is a manuscript. Rearranging separate type pieces changes a printing layout without carving a whole new page block.

Three separate type pieces M, A and P are shown in one row, then rearranged P, A and M. Reusable pieces can form a new layout, unlike a single fixed whole-page block.
