In the conventional BCE/CE year system there is no year zero: 1 BCE is followed by 1 CE. For the same calendar point crossing the boundary, add the two year numbers and subtract one. This is a simplified year-counting exercise.

Worked example

From the start of 3 BCE to the start of 2 CE is 3 + 2 - 1 = 4 years.

Five successive year marks read 3 BCE, 2 BCE, 1 BCE, 1 CE, 2 CE. There are four intervals between the first and last; the conventional system has no year zero.
