Read dates from earliest to latest. To find elapsed years between two dates in this worksheet, subtract the earlier year from the later year. Do not count the starting year as a whole extra year.

Worked example

If a library opened in 1972 and a park opened in 1980, the park opened 1980 - 1972 = 8 years later. The gap is eight years, not nine.

A dated timeline places a library opening at 1972 and a park opening at 1980, separated by eight equal yearly intervals. — On this evenly spaced example, subtract the earlier year from the later year to find elapsed years.

This timeline is invented for practice, not a record of a real town. Bridge opened: 1998. Library opened: 2003. Playground opened: 2006. Community garden opened: 2010. Treat the dates as the same point in each year when calculating whole-year gaps.
