Learn the skill

For dates in the same era, put smaller year numbers first. To find elapsed years, subtract the earlier year from the later one. A timeline shows order, not automatically cause.

Worked example

A library opening in 1972 comes before a park opening in 1980. The events are 1980 - 1972 = 8 years apart.

A Fictional Town Timeline

1905: a school opens. 1950: a library opens. 1990: a playground opens. These dates were invented to practice reading timelines.

1. Which event happened first?
2. How many years passed from the school opening to the library opening?
3. How many years passed from the library opening to the playground opening?
4. Which event belongs between the other two?
5. Does the order prove the library caused the playground to open?
