A historical map shows choices made by its creator for a purpose and date. Boundaries, names and claimed control can differ from current ones. A map is evidence of representation, not automatic proof that everyone accepted every line. All map cards below are invented.

Worked example

A map marked proposed boundary shows a proposal. It is not proof that the line was adopted or accepted.
