A primary source comes from the time or activity being studied; a secondary source analyzes evidence about it. Classification depends on the research question. Neither label guarantees accuracy.

Worked example

For studying a 1910 fair, a visitor's 1910 diary is primary evidence. A historian's later account interpreting several records is secondary evidence.

1. For studying the 1910 fair, which item is a primary source?
2. Which item is a secondary source for that fair?
3. Does being a primary source make a diary accurate in every detail?
4. Why compare the diary with a dated photograph?
5. Could a modern textbook be a primary source for studying how history was taught when it was published?
