Learn the skill

Describe what an object shows before explaining what it might mean. Labels, materials, and wear can provide clues. An object rarely answers every question about the people who used it.

Worked example

A worn shoe shows use, but it does not by itself reveal its owner's favorite game. A dated repair receipt could provide another clue.

An Invented Museum Label

Paper railway ticket, issued in 1924, naming River Station and Hill Station. One corner is torn. The label does not identify the traveler or the journey's purpose.

1. Which detail is directly observed?
2. Which question can the date help answer?
3. Which claim goes beyond the supplied evidence?
4. What could help investigate the reason for the journey?
5. Why record where an object was found?
