People may use more than one language, and languages can cross political borders. To count people in either of two groups, add both group totals then subtract those counted in both. Survey language labels and all counts here are fictional.

Worked example

40 respondents use A, 30 use B, and 10 use both. The number using A or B or both is 40 + 30 - 10 = 60.

Overlapping groups show 30 people using only A, 10 using both A and B, and 20 using only B. Totals are A 40, B 30, and at least one 60, not 70.
