A map key explains what a symbol means on that map. Symbols can mean different things on different maps, so read this key first. An adult can read the clues aloud.

Worked example

On a key that says circle = pond, a circle marks a pond. A different key could use a circle for something else.

Example map key: a circle means pond, triangle means tree, and square means hut. Each question supplies its own legend; symbols need not keep the same meaning across maps.
