Flattening a curved surface creates distortion. Equal-area projections preserve relative areas; conformal projections preserve local angles and shapes at very small scales. Choose a property suited to the task rather than expecting one flat world map to preserve everything.

Worked example

To compare the relative areas of large regions, an equal-area map is useful even if outlines look stretched. Preserving area does not mean preserving every distance or angle.

1. Which property is the priority when comparing the relative areas of continents?
2. What does a conformal projection preserve?
3. Can one flat map of the whole Earth preserve all areas, shapes, and distances exactly?
4. Why can two equal-area projections still show different outlines?
5. What should accompany a projection choice in an analysis?
