Learn the skill

A map key explains what symbols mean on that map. Read the key before deciding what a symbol represents; other maps may use different symbols.

Worked example

If a key says a triangle means campsite, three triangles mark three campsites, not necessarily three mountains.

Trail Map Key

On this trail map, a circle means a water fountain, a triangle means a campsite, a square means a ranger station, and a dashed line means a walking trail. Route A passes two circles and one square. Route B passes one triangle and one circle.

1. What does a circle mean on this map?
2. What represents a walking trail?
3. Which route passes a ranger station?
4. How many water fountains does Route A pass?
5. On a different map, what should you do before interpreting a triangle?
