A land-cover percentage compares the area of a stated cover type with the full mapped area. The categories in these models do not overlap. A map date matters because land cover can change. These are invented land-cover surveys.

Worked example

Forest covering 12 of 40 square km occupies 30% of that mapped area.

A four-by-five grid of equal-area cells has six marked F for forest and fourteen marked with a dash. Forest occupies six of twenty cells, or 30%, in this invented map.
