A legend must say which class owns a boundary value. Here lower bounds are included and upper bounds excluded: 10 <= x < 20 includes 10 but not 20. Color alone cannot settle an ambiguous legend.

Worked example

A value of 20 belongs to 20 <= x < 30, not 10 <= x < 20.

Legend boxes define 0 up to but not including 10, 10 up to but not including 20, and 20 up to but not including 30. Ten belongs to the middle class and twenty to the last.

Doubling both width and height makes four times the area. This is why enlarging a map changes area faster than length.
