Use east longitudes as positive and west as negative. Take their absolute difference; if it exceeds 180 degrees, subtract it from 360. This is an angular longitude separation, not a ground distance or general great-circle distance.

Worked example

170 E and 170 W differ by 340 numerically, but their smaller longitude separation is 360 - 340 = 20 degrees.
