Learn the skill

Latitude measures north or south of the equator, from 0 to 90 degrees. Longitude measures east or west of the prime meridian, up to 180 degrees. Read latitude first in the pairs below.

Worked example

A point at 20 degrees S, 30 degrees E is south of the equator and east of the prime meridian. The two numbers describe different directions.

1. A point is at 15 degrees N, 40 degrees W. Which hemispheres contain it?
