Average population density equals people divided by area. It does not mean people are evenly spread. Use the stated population and area for the same boundary and date. These regions are invented.
Worked example
600 people in 3 square km gives 200 people per square km on average, not 200 in every square.
Three equal-area cells contain different numbers of symbolic dots to show uneven settlement. A separate worked calculation gives 600 people in three square kilometers, averaging 200 per square kilometer. Dots are not individual people counts.
