Longitude is measured east or west from the prime meridian through Greenwich. For these points strictly between 0 and 180 degrees, E means Eastern Hemisphere and W means Western Hemisphere. Longitude alone does not give latitude.

Worked example

A point at 40 degrees W lies west of the prime meridian; its latitude is not supplied.

Schematic globe labels North and South with an equatorial line at latitude zero. Latitude uses N or S; longitude uses E or W relative to the prime meridian. No real land boundaries are shown.
