A route can bend. Add the distances of all segments traveled, using the same units. A straight line between start and finish is a different measurement. These routes are invented.

Worked example

Walk 3 blocks east, then 2 north: the route length is 5 blocks, even though the path bends.

A bent route goes three blocks east, then two blocks north. Labeled segment lengths sum to five traveled blocks. The diagram is schematic, not a scale drawing of a shortcut.
