Rainfall depths measured over non-overlapping periods can be added when they use the same location and units. A total does not tell whether rain was gentle or intense. These records are invented.

Worked example

At one gauge, 12 mm on Monday and 8 mm on Tuesday total 20 mm across those two days.

Bars on a common zero baseline show 12 mm Monday, 8 mm Tuesday and 5 mm Wednesday at one fictional gauge. The three non-overlapping daily rainfall depths total 25 mm.
